What a blast I had at TexWorld!!

27 Jan

We finally had an opportunity to attend TexWorld, it’s a trade show where you can go and make connections, browse through fabrics for your collection and meet some amazing people. It was really an amazing experience and I can’t wait to attend the next one. My first collection won’t have any hijabs, but as soon as I went to the trade show I fell in love with materials that I totally pictured as hijabs. Each vendor had some exceptional materials and it was hard to walk out of there not spending a dime or making any orders. I will insha’Allah once my first collection is up and running. For now we picked up some swatches and took pictures of future fabrics that I hope to be adding to my next collection for hijabs and garments.

Here are some pictures that we were able to take and I’m posting it to share my TexWorld day with you. I won’t be able to post the pictures of the fabrics, you will just have to wait till I launch collection #2… 🙂

Entering into the world of Textiles!!!

Check out all those amazing fabrics lined up! "drooling!!!"

Thinking if I should go in or not?? Some of the vendors fabrics won't work for my collection, and so sometimes there isn't a point in entering a booth until you've checked out all of the ones you really want to see and then you can come back to the maybe's towards the end.

Browsing through a selection of fabrics.

I really liked this fabric, the color really stood out.

My assistant/model and myself. Behind us is tables full of swatches from all of the booths, this way you can make your experience convenient for yourself. How that works is that you look at the swatches and write down the booth number and then go to the booth to check out the fabrics. The setup was beautiful, each table was organized by color, fabric styles and they added candies, jewelry and other items to match the theme, they didn't allow pictures to be taken of that area. 😦

Rubbing my growing belly 🙂

Filing out some forms 🙂

I had an amazing time at TexWorld, now it’s time to contact some of the vendors to possibly place orders. My first collection is on it’s way. There were a few set backs that have been resolved and I’m working really hard with my manufacturer to complete the remaining items so I can finally launch my line!!!

DIY Abaya

18 Jan

Assalaam Alaykum,

I finally finished the abaya tutorial, it’s been a crazy past 2 weeks for me! Allhumdulillah everything is okay, it’s just been hectic with both good and bad days! I am happy that I finally get to work on editing and uploading the videos. I have used sari fabric, this is fabric that Indian women wrap around their body, using draping and other methods, wearing a petticoat and blouse underneath. I used to wear it, I just found it uncomfortable, but it all depends on how it’s wrapped and many women find is really easy to put on and wear.

My mom had given me a bunch of saris years back to play around with, I never wanted to cut it up and make something but she did tell me to make something beautiful with them. So I finally took a chance and made an abaya with one of them. Let me tell you, I don’t really wear abaya’s, maybe to the mosque or for Eid, but I am totally in love with this abaya that I made. The patterns from the fabric worked to my advantage and it looks stunning. I didn’t use lining for this project, so if you do plan on making an abaya with light fabric, lining would be a smart option. I plan on pairing it with a long sleeved shirt and pants so it won’t be see thru. The sari is made up of 6 yards of fabric, I used my entire sari and the last yard and a half I will make a hijab to match my abaya.

For those of you that are comfortable with sewing, you won’t have any problems with this. For those that are new and may have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask, leave a comment below, on my YouTube page or email me at hijabizlovefashiontoo@gmail.com. Using something in your wardrobe for a pattern is OKAY, when you are an expert, then you can make your own patterns.

What you will need for this project:

  • 5-6 yards of fabric (buy get 58″-60″ wide material)
  • sewing machine
  • matching thread
  • a shirt that you can trace from (should be loose fitting)
  • scissors
  • measuring tape
  • marking tool
  • pins

You will also need to measure: PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO ADD EASE, IF YOU WANT YOUR ABAYA TO BE LOOSE, AFTER YOU TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS, ADD AS MUCH EASE AS YOU NEED. I WOULD SUGGEST TO USE A VERY LOOSE FITTING SHIRT OR AN EXISTING ABAYA THAT YOU MAY HAVE IN YOUR WARDROBE AND THIS WAY YOU’LL ELIMINATE TAKING YOUR OWN MEASUREMENT AND JUST TRACE.

  • shoulder measurement
  • bust measurement
  • waist and hip measurements
  • sleeve length
  • body length (to decide how long you want the abaya to be)
  • DO NOT FORGET TO ADD EASE AND SEAM ALLOWANCE!!!!
I tried my best to make this into one video, but I ended up making a part 2 video because it was too long. It’s really hard to do a short tutorial when you are making everything from scratch and even with eliminating a lot of sewing steps and just explaining the cutting, I still ended up with a really long tutorial. I had an hour of video on this and somehow I made it fit into two under 10 min videos!
PART ONE
PART TWO
Good luck with your projects, I would love to see pics!!! I am sorry about the video quality, I promise that one day I will have perfect lighting and an area all to myself to do the tutorials.

My flower art hijab…

3 Jan

A little fuzzy hijab art…I wanted to show off my latest creation…my hijab art, I know this is huge in Egypt and I was fascinated with the flower hijab art when I was in Egypt. I’ve made the flower plenty of times, the first time was when I attended my sister’s wedding, it turned out all right and I have been practising ever since. So after a million tries I finally made it perfect!!! And here it is, too bad the pic isn’t clear enough but you can still see the flower.
